No trip to Barbados is complete without sipping on our most famous cocktail – Rum Punch. Sweet, strong, and perfectly tropical, this bright orange-red drink is a staple at every Bajan gathering, from beach picnics to elegant weddings.
The classic recipe follows a rhyme known across the island: “One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, and four of weak. A dash of bitters and a sprinkle of spice – serve it well chilled with plenty of ice.”
The “strong” in question is, of course, Barbadian rum – and they take their rum seriously. Mount Gay, the world’s oldest rum distillery dating back to 1703, is right here on the island, along with other excellent brands like Foursquare and St. Nicholas Abbey.
Each rum punch may taste a little different depending on who’s making it – some add orange juice, others use falernum (a spiced Bajan syrup), and many top it with freshly grated nutmeg. It’s delicious any time of day but best enjoyed while watching a sunset over the Caribbean Sea.
